Race Report – Couriers 60 mile RR Sunday 11 July 2010
11th July 2010

The first ever road race organised by the Glasgow Couriers was held on a very wet and windy day. 28 brave souls took to the roads around Eaglesham for this inaugural race. Within 5 miles of the flag being pulled in the winning move had been established. The gap hovered at around 1 minute, however, by the 25 mile mark the gap was up to 2 minutes. The break of 9 included talented Englishman Matt Kipling, local “hardman” Stevie Russell (previous winner of the Tour of the Reservoir), along with a few other top names. This break fragmented on the third lap leaving Kipling, Russell, Gordon Murdoch and Grant Stevenson to fight it out for the victory. Back in what was left of the peloton former Commonwealth Games athlete Rab Wardell was trying desperately to bridge across to the break. However, it was too little too late as he ran out of steam before the end. A good try all the same. In the end Kipling was just too strong for his breakaway companions and crossed the line with 20 seconds to spare. Stevenson crossed the line for second, closely followed by Murdoch and then Russell. Other notable performances were Scott McCrossan (1st Junior) in 5th place and Mari Todd (1st Woman) in 20th place.
